Review – Frances Ha

TWEESTRAVAGANZA

Frances Ha sort of crept up on me. It wasn’t a film I was really particularly aware of, or interested in, but then Mark Kermode gave it a good review and told me that Noah Baumbach (what done the Squid and the Whale) directed it and I was SOLD.

It’s quirky and twee and a bit pretentious. Needlessly shot in black and white, twenty something Frances is an aspiring dancer who faces challenges when her best friend essentially breaks up with her.

What saves Frances Ha from being disgustingly twee are two things. One is Greta Gerwig who is incredibly charming as Frances and really wins you over. The other is the fact that despite Frances’ quirky manic pixie dream girl qualities, she’s forced to engage with reality regularly. She has money worries and not everyone finds her to be a charming adorkable sweetheart. There’s an excruciating dinner scene where she just does not fit in and EEEK. It’s awkward as hell.

That said, Frances Ha is by no means a gritty film , it IS twee and a bit quirky and if you loathe quirky and twee, then this isn’t the film for you. However, if you just dislike quirk, it might win you over.

Personally I really liked it, it was super cute and charming and warm and funny and a really pleasant way to spend an hour and a half. TEAM FRANCES HA!
